Now that we have computers speaking a common language - the language of numbers - the next step is to find out how they "think" of these numbers. Every computer in the world, from the giants that send spaceships to the moon to the smallest game-playing home computer, shares a common denominator, a universal currency, the numbers 0 and 1. These two numbers are the famous bits, or binary digits. They are the only two digits used in the binary, or base-2, number system, just as o through 9 are the only ten digits in our familiar base-10 decimal system. Zero and one are very comfortable for computers to work with, because they can represent the two electrical states used by the machines - high and low voltage. And between them, the two binary digits can be combined in longer and longer groups to represent any conceivable number. Computer people don't usually work with bits, though; they are too small. Instead, the most commonly used unit is a group of eight bits, called a byte, and is approximately the amount of information storage needed to specify one alphanumeric or control character. Larger groups of bytes are kilobytes (KB), or roughly one thousand bytes, and megabytes (MB), or about one million bytes. But all of these groupings still are multiples of 2, the binary digits 0 and 1. If you own or use a microcomputer (or personal computer), you know about your computer's amount of RAM, or random access memory, and its disk-storage capacity - its ability to store information on either floppy or hard disks. On these computers, memory is measured in kilobytes, and disk storage is measured in kilobytes or megabytes. 44

You start making a game by creating a brand-new project. I called mine JakeDisplay. You create the project using the New Project dialog box as you ve done for all your previous projects. Remember that the project you are creating is either a Windows Game (2.0) or an Xbox Game (2.0). You can see this dialog box in use in Figure 1-16 in 1, Computers, Xboxes, C#, XNA, and You. Note that the Create Directory For Solution option is selected in this dialog box. Whenever you create a project, you should ensure that this option is selected. This will create a directory structure that contains the program and all the other items that are required to make the game work. Figure 4-2 shows what is created when I make a new project called JakeDisplay.

As you work with a project on your computer workstation, solution files, project files, and XML-based definition files for cubes and dimensions are stored on your local drive by default. You cannot browse a cube using only the files on your workstation. Instead, you must deploy these files to the Analysis Server where they can be processed and read into storage. There are several ways that you can move the required files to the Analysis Server, which you will learn about in 13. In this chapter, you will use Visual Studio to deploy your project. When you process a cube, the Analysis server automatically processes any dimensions that are used in the cube that have not yet been processed. So, to process the cube and all its dimensions, you need to execute only one command. In this procedure, you ll deploy the My First Cube project to the Analysis Server where it is processed and made available for viewing.

However, the file JakeDisplay that you can see in the directory is a solution. This might be confusing. You ve used the New Project command in XNA Game Studio 2.0 and have ended up with a solution. In this case, XNA Game Studio 2.0 has created a solution called JakeDisplay and then added a single project to that solution. The project is also called JakeDisplay.

Deploy and process an Analysis Services project 1. In Visual Studio, right-click the My First Cube project in Solution Explorer, and then click Deploy. When the deployment is complete, the Deployment Progress window looks like this:
